I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery in my garage last spring, mainly because our evening electricity use was pushing us into expensive peak pricing. After three months, the biggest difference is not independence; it is how predictable the household bill has become.
Before the battery, our solar panels exported plenty of power around lunchtime, then we bought electricity after dinner. Now the battery charges from surplus solar until it reaches its evening target, and our dishwasher, induction hob, lights, and heat-pump water heater run mostly from stored energy. On sunny days, the house stays on solar and battery power until breakfast. Our monthly bill has fallen from about $185 to $78, although winter weather will probably make that gap smaller. I am saving roughly $90 to $110 a month during the brighter seasons, which makes the investment feel tangible rather than theoretical.
The monitoring app has been useful. I can see battery state of charge, solar production, household consumption, and grid import in five-minute increments. I initially worried about a lifepo4 overcharge, so I checked the manufacturer's voltage limits and confirmed that the battery management system stops charging automatically. I did not change any protection settings; I set a sensible 90 percent maximum charge and left the certified installer’s configuration alone.
My only hiccup happened during a cloudy week when the battery reached its reserve unexpectedly early. The app showed repeated grid imports, and I discovered the backup reserve had been set to 30 percent instead of 15 percent. Lowering it restored the evening savings, while keeping enough emergency capacity for outages.
The quiet operation and zero maintenance have been more valuable than I expected. It is not magic, and I still buy power in winter, but this battery has made our energy use calmer, cheaper, and easier to understand.
