After two months of watching my electricity bills climb, I finally added a 10-kWh lithium solar battery to my rooftop system. The biggest reason was not energy independence; it was avoiding those expensive evening hours.

The installation was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and set the reserve at 20%. The app took a few days to make sense, but the basic pattern became obvious: charge from solar after breakfast, then run the refrigerator, lights, and heat pump from the battery after sunset.

My first full month was the pleasant surprise. Before storage, I averaged about $190 in winter. With the battery, that dropped to $126, even though the weather was similarly cold. On sunny days, I often reached 100% by mid-afternoon and used nearly all of it between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. I am not pretending it erased my bill; the fixed utility charges remained, and cloudy stretches still required grid power. But saving roughly $64 each month feels real, especially when I hear the furnace running during a peak rate period without watching the meter nervously.

There was one small hiccup. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at night and sat at 34%. I power-cycled the communications box, checked the backup setting, and called support. They reset the operating mode remotely, and it was normal by dinner. I appreciate having backup power during outages, although I have not yet tested it during a long outage at home.

That kind of minor troubleshooting is worth mentioning: solar storage is not completely set-and-forget, but so far it has been quieter and more useful than I expected.
