I installed my solar battery last spring, and the biggest surprise has been how much quieter our evenings feel financially. Before it arrived, our rooftop panels produced plenty during the day, but we sent much of that energy back to the grid for a modest credit. After dinner, we bought power again at expensive evening rate. The battery changed that routine almost immediately. I programmed it to charge from solar and discharge between five and nine at night, when our cooking, laundry, and heat-pump water heater are all running.
On a typical sunny weekday, the battery reaches full by early afternoon. We use roughly eight to ten kilowatt-hours overnight, depending on the weather. My utility bill used to average about $185 per month in summer. During the first full billing month with storage, it dropped to $112, even though our usage was nearly the same. That is not a dramatic claim based on one perfect month; the next month was $126. Still, the savings are obvious, especially because the battery covers the costly hours instead of merely exporting cheap afternoon electricity.
The only hiccup came during a cloudy week in November. The state-of-charge reading stayed at 100 percent while the app showed almost no charging history. I first thought the system had stopped working. After checking the breaker and inverter, I found the monitoring app had lost its connection to our Wi-Fi. The battery itself was operating normally; it was quietly supplying the house. Reconnecting the network fixed the display, but that moment taught me not to confuse missing data with missing power.
