Two summers ago, I added a 10kWh solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly because our evening electricity use was eating into the savings. I work from home, and by five o’clock the house is running the oven, dishwasher, heat-pump water heater, and lights. Before storage, I was sending daytime solar back to the grid and buying power during the expensive peak period.
After installation, the biggest change was simply changing when I used stored energy. The battery charges from solar around midday and switches over automatically at 4:00 p.m. I did not need to rewire appliances or remember anything. During the first week, I kept opening the monitoring app like a kid checking a new thermostat. It showed the battery covering nearly all our evening load until bedtime. On cloudy days, it usually saved some power, then topped up from the grid overnight only when necessary.
My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 in summer to $95, although weather and utility rates varied. The most satisfying part was avoiding peak pricing, not watching the solar export credit. I estimate the battery saves me about $50 to $70 each month in the hottest season. That feels more predictable than relying on net metering alone.
I did have one minor scare. One evening the app said “standby” while the house was pulling from the grid. I checked the breaker, confirmed the battery was not overheated, and found a loose communications cable behind the inverter. After reseating it, the system resumed discharge within a minute. The installer also suggested keeping the cable strain relieved, which I did with a small clip. It has been trouble-free since.
My unit uses an lto cell chemistry, and I value its long cycle life, quiet operation, and predictable evening savings every day in our busy home.
