Running my evening routine changed after I added a growatt sph battery to our rooftop solar system. Before that, our panels produced plenty during the day, but we still bought expensive electricity after dinner, exactly when the tariff climbed. Now the inverter charges the lithium battery with surplus solar, and I use that stored energy for cooking, washing dishes, and running the heat pump.
The biggest difference shows up between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. On sunny days, I usually reach evening with the battery around 90% full. By bedtime, I have used roughly half of it, rather than pulling from the grid. My utility statements have dropped by about 35%, or around $70-$90 monthly depending on weather. That is not a theoretical app estimate; it is what I see after comparing bills over several months.
Setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the hybrid inverter beside our electrical panel and configured a backup reserve of 20%. I like that reserve because the system keeps some charge for outages instead of emptying itself completely during peak hours.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the monitoring app showed the battery disconnected, although the house was still running normally. I power-cycled the inverter, waited five minutes, and restored the connection. The data returned, but I now check the app after updates rather than assuming every alert means a hardware failure.
The battery has also made nighttime usage quieter financially. I no longer think about whether running the dishwasher at 7:00 p.m. will hurt. I simply schedule it when solar production is low, knowing the storage system will cover most of the load. For me, that combination of peak tariff savings, easy automation, and a backup reserve has made home solar feel much more practical.
