I installed a 10 kWh lifepo4 solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop array is fairly modest, so I was not expecting complete energy independence. What I wanted was simple: charge the battery with sunshine, then use that stored power after dinner when the utility rate jumps.

The setup took most of a day. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and added the monitoring app. The app was useful immediately, although the first evening it showed confusingly high “house load” numbers. I eventually discovered that the battery backup circuit included my refrigerator and internet equipment, while several other appliances were still on the grid. Once I understood that split, the readings made sense.

The biggest difference appears on ordinary weekdays. Before the battery, my electric bill averaged around $185 in the hottest months. After shifting cooking, lighting, and evening air-conditioning to the battery, similar months have landed between $105 and $125. That is not a perfect comparison because weather changes, but the peak-hour savings are obvious in the app. I usually come home to a battery around 70 percent, run the dishwasher overnight, and still have a reserve left by morning.

I did have one minor scare during a cloudy week. The battery reached its low reserve setting and stopped discharging, even though I expected it to keep running. I had accidentally raised the backup reserve to 40 percent while exploring the settings. Lowering it to 20 percent fixed the issue, and customer support confirmed the battery was fine.

My solar battery does not eliminate the utility bill, but it makes our energy use feel more controlled. For my home, lifepo4 chemistry, usable capacity, and straightforward monitoring make solar power more practical.
