Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive electricity in the evening. My solar panels usually finish producing useful power around 5 p.m., just when our household starts cooking, running the dishwasher, and using lights. Before the battery, that was when our grid consumption jumped.
The biggest practical difference has been shifting those hours to stored solar energy. On a sunny day, the battery charges by early afternoon, then powers the house through dinner and usually into the night. Our utility’s peak rate is roughly twice the daytime rate, so this simple change has reduced my monthly bill by about $45 to $70, depending on weather and how often we use the heat pump. It is not a dramatic “no electric bill” situation, but the savings are very noticeable over a year.
I originally searched for lithium rv batteries because I liked their reputation for being light and long-lasting, but I ended up choosing a residential battery system designed to work directly with my solar inverter. The monitoring app shows solar production, battery charging, home usage, and grid import in a way I can actually understand. I check it more than I expected, especially during cloudy weeks.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging during the scheduled evening window. The app still showed a full charge, so I assumed something had failed. A support technician had me reboot the inverter and confirm the time zone setting. The schedule had shifted by an hour after the update, and the problem disappeared.
After several months, my favorite feature is not the backup power during outages, although that is reassuring. It is quietly using my own solar energy after sunset instead of selling it cheaply to the grid and buying power back at the highest rate. That everyday benefit is what makes this energy storage system worthwhile for me.
