I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, and the change in our evening electricity routine has been bigger than I expected. My system uses a lithium ion iron phosphate battery paired with our rooftop solar panels, a hybrid inverter, and a phone monitoring app.
The installation itself was surprisingly painless. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, added a backup gateway, and finished the wiring in most of a day. I did spend a week checking the app every few hours, mostly because I wanted to understand the charge cycle rather than blindly trust the numbers. On sunny days, solar power runs the house first, then fills the battery. After sunset, the battery supplies our lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and washing machine.
The real savings show up during peak hours. Our utility charges much more from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when we cook dinner and everyone is home. Before storage, those hours regularly added roughly $3 to $5 per day in summer. Now the battery carries nearly all of that load. Our monthly bill fell from about $185 to $92 in the first full summer month, despite running the air conditioner normally. It is not free electricity—the panels and battery cost real money—but avoiding peak rates feels immediately practical.
I did have one small scare. During a firmware update, the app showed the battery offline for about twenty minutes. The house stayed powered, and the inverter's status light was normal, but I still called the installer. They explained that monitoring had rebooted, not the battery itself. Since then, I check the inverter light before panicking.
The battery has made solar power useful after dark, not merely impressive at noon. Seeing evening energy come from stored sunlight is satisfying, and the lower peak-hour bill matters every month.
