I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My solar panels already covered most daytime use, but after cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and turning on the heat pump, the meter seemed to spin fastest between 5 and 9 p.m. The battery has made that part of the day calmer.
My installer mounted the battery beside the garage and connected it to a single battery inverter, with the solar inverter and household loads managed through the monitoring app. I initially set the backup reserve at 20 percent, then raised it to 35 percent after one storm knocked out power. Losing a little daily capacity is worth having emergency energy for the refrigerator, internet router, and lights.
The biggest difference shows up on my bill. Before adding storage, I averaged about 18 kWh from the grid each evening in winter. Now the battery usually supplies 10 to 13 kWh after sunset, recharging from solar the next day. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $145 to $82 during the colder months. It is not a dramatic zero-dollar bill, because cloudy weeks still require grid power, but the peak-rate savings are real. I also changed my battery schedule to charge only from surplus solar, rather than cheap grid electricity.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery at 100 percent while the house was still importing power. I found the system had switched to a backup-only mode after an outage. Cycling that setting and restarting the gateway fixed it, and support confirmed the battery itself was fine.
After several months I appreciate the storage system less as fancy equipment and more as a bill-management tool. It works in the background, and that is exactly what I wanted.
