Every evening, I notice the difference my solar battery makes when the house goes quiet. I installed a deye solar hybrid inverter with a 10kWh lithium battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset.
On sunny days, the panels fill the battery by mid-afternoon. I have the system set to discharge during our utility’s peak window, from 4–9pm. That timing has been more valuable than I expected. We cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and use the clothes dryer while the battery is supplying power. Instead of watching the meter climb at the rate, I see very little grid consumption. My evening usage used to add roughly $2–$3 a day in summer. Now it is often under fifty cents, depending on how much energy the heat pump needs. Across a month, I am saving around $45–$70, with the biggest improvement in July and August.
The hiccup came during a cloudy week. The battery reached its low reserve, and the inverter stopped discharging earlier than I expected. I thought the solar battery had failed. After checking the app, I realized I had raised the backup reserve to 40% while experimenting with settings. Lowering it to 20% fixed the issue, and I leave that reserve in place so essential loads have protection during an outage.
What I appreciate most is that the savings feel practical rather than theoretical. I do not have to change our routine or remember to switch appliances. The monitoring app shows solar production, battery state of charge, and grid import clearly enough for me to spot unusual behavior quickly. I am considering adding another battery eventually, but for now the existing capacity covers our normal evening well. For a household wanting lower peak rates, this setup has been an upgrade that pays me back every day.
