Only last spring, I finally added a 10kWh lithium solar battery to my rooftop system. Before that, my panels sent excess electricity straight to the grid during the afternoon, while I bought it back after dinner at a much higher rate. The battery has changed that rhythm.

The electrician mounted the inverter and battery in a ventilated garage corner, then connected the monitoring app. Setup was not painless: the app showed “offline” even though the battery was charging. I restarted the gateway, checked the Wi-Fi signal, and it came back. Since then, it has been boringly reliable, which is exactly what I wanted.

My biggest saving comes between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. I set the battery to charge from solar first and discharge during those peak hours. We run the dishwasher, charge phones, cook dinner, and use the heat pump without pulling much from the grid. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $95 in the first full month, though weather and rates vary. Over the summer, the battery covers about 60% of our evening electricity, according to the app.

I also like having backup power during short outages. It is not a whole-home generator, but it keeps the refrigerator, modem, a few lights, and my powerbank charged. That detail matters when an outage lasts through bedtime.

The only annoyance is remembering to check battery settings after a utility rate change. I once left it in backup reserve mode, so it barely discharged and missed a sunny afternoon. A quick adjustment fixed it.

For me, solar storage has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made our energy use cheaper and more predictable. Three months in, I am glad I chose a battery sized for our evening demand instead of chasing the biggest number.
