Solution LiFePO4 Battery Cell
I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. Before storage, our solar panels exported most of their afternoon output, then the house pulled power from the grid after dinner. That felt wasteful, especially when cooking and running the heat pump.
The installer configured the battery to charge from solar and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility’s peak rate applies. On sunny days, the battery reaches nearly full by lunch. By bedtime, it is usually around 25 to 35 percent, depending on whether we used the induction stove, dryer, or air conditioner. Our monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $105 during summer, although weather and appliance use obviously change the comparison. I especially notice the difference on cloudy days: even a partial charge covers the expensive hours instead of disappearing immediately into the grid.
I did have one scare with the battery monitoring app. It showed a warning related to the lifepo4 max cell voltage after a particularly bright day, and the state of charge stopped at 98 percent. I checked the inverter screen and saw that balancing was active. Rather than changing settings myself, I called the installer. They explained that the protection limit was doing its job and advised me not to raise the max voltage. The warning cleared after balancing finished, and it has not returned.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic routine. I do not have to think about switching circuits or starting a generator. The battery backup also keeps the refrigerator, internet equipment, and a few lights running during outages. It has not eliminated my electric bill, but the solar-plus-storage system makes our solar power much more useful. For me, the peak-hour savings alone have made the battery worthwhile.
