I installed a victron multiplus 2 last spring after watching my electricity bills climb every summer. My setup is modest: eight roof panels, a 10 kWh lithium battery, and a meter connected to the inverter. I am not trying to live off-grid; I wanted to stop buying expensive power between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
The installation took a day. The electrician mounted the inverter and battery in the garage, then spent time configuring the charge and discharge limits. That part mattered more than I expected. On the evening, the battery stopped discharging at 20 percent, as programmed, and the house quietly switched back to grid power.
My biggest saving comes during peak hours. Before the battery, our air conditioner, induction cooktop, and pool pump pushed our evening usage into the highest tariff period. Now the solar battery charges around midday and carries most of the house through dinner. In the first full month, my bill dropped from about $285 to $142, despite similar weather and household habits. The next month was closer to $155 because we had several cloudy days, but that still felt worthwhile.
I did have a small troubleshooting moment. The battery appeared to stop charging at 94 percent. I initially assumed something was broken, but the installer explained that the battery management system was balancing cells and deliberately holding the final few percent. After a firmware update and a little patience, it occasionally reached 100 percent again.
The system has not made electricity free, and winter production is noticeably weaker. Still, the victron multiplus 2 has made our solar power much more useful. I now think of the battery less as emergency backup and more as a way to shift our energy use away from costly evening rates. That practical difference is what convinced me the investment was worthwhile.
