Running my home on solar battery storage has changed the way I think about electricity bills, especially during the expensive evening hours. I installed a growatt 1kw setup with a small rooftop solar array and lithium battery, mainly to reduce grid use rather than become completely energy independent.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility charges peak rates. Before the battery, we would come home, switch on lights, cook dinner, run the television, and pull nearly everything from the grid. Now the solar inverter charges the battery during the afternoon, and the battery supplies most of that evening demand. On sunny days, my daily grid consumption has dropped by roughly a third. The saving is not dramatic every single day, but over a full month it has made a noticeable difference—usually around $35 to $50 less on the bill, depending on the weather and how much cooking we do.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during the first month. The battery stopped discharging overnight, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I eventually found that the system had switched to a backup reserve setting after a brief power interruption. Once I adjusted the reserve percentage and restarted the inverter, normal battery cycling returned. The lesson for me was that solar storage is not entirely “set and forget”; it helps to understand the battery schedule, state of charge, and backup settings.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I rarely notice the system working, but I notice when the evening grid usage graph stays low. I am considering adding another battery module later, although I want to track seasonal production first. For now, this setup gives me practical energy savings, some outage protection, and much better use of the solar power I generate.
