Solution Solar Battery
Using my solar battery after six months, the biggest change is how little I think about peak-rate electricity. My setup is a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery connected to a 5 kW hybrid inverter and rooftop solar. I installed it mainly to avoid buying expensive evening power.
On a normal sunny day, the panels run the house and fill the battery by mid-afternoon. Around 4 p.m., the inverter stops exporting and saves the remaining charge. When our utility’s peak period starts, the battery carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and the washing machine. I set a 20% reserve, so there is still backup capacity if the grid fails overnight.
Before storage, our summer bill averaged about $145 a month. Since adding the solar battery, it has usually landed between $55 and $75, depending on cloudy weather and air-conditioning use. The best savings come from shifting those evening loads; more solar panels would not have helped because we were already exporting midday energy for a low credit.
My annoying moment came during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 8 p.m., even though the monitoring app showed plenty of charge. I found that the inverter had reverted to “backup only” after a firmware update. Switching it back to time-of-use mode fixed the problem, although I lost one evening of savings. I check the app after updates instead of assuming settings stayed put.
I briefly considered trying to build your own lifepo4 battery pack, because DIY battery storage can reduce upfront cost. In the end, I chose a packaged unit with a warranty and battery management system. For me, predictable operation mattered more than squeezing out the lowest price. The battery has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made solar power useful after sunset and made rate changes less stressful.
