4:00 a.m. on a Tuesday, I woke to rain tapping the roof and checked my solar battery app out of habit. The battery was at 62%, even though the solar panels had produced almost nothing since sunset. That small number still felt reassuring: the house was quietly running from stored energy, not pulling expensive electricity from the grid. I installed a 10 kWh lithium battery last spring, mainly to avoid our utility’s evening peak rates. Before that, dinner, laundry, and the heat pump all landed in the costliest hours.
The biggest difference shows up between 5 and 9 p.m. I program the inverter to charge from rooftop solar during the day and discharge during those hours. On sunny days, it covers the induction cooktop, dishwasher, lights, and most of our heat-pump usage. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $112, although weather and changing rates make every month different. I am not pretending the battery erased the bill; the fixed connection charge remains, and winter production is weak. Still, the savings are visible enough that my spouse now checks the battery percentage before starting laundry.
My only real hiccup happened during the first hot weekend. I connected a small workshop circuit that includes a 24v dc motor for a ventilation fan, and the inverter briefly reported an overload when the fan started. I initially blamed the battery, but the startup surge was the culprit. The installer adjusted the circuit and added a soft-start controller. Since then, the fan starts cleanly, and the battery monitor shows a steady draw. That episode taught me to look at surge ratings, not just the battery’s advertised capacity. It also made me appreciate having an installer who answered the phone instead of sending me to a generic manual.
For me, dependable backup power and lower peak-hour bills matter more than chasing perfect energy independence or impressive app graphs alone.
