I installed a 10 kWh life po4 battery last summer after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every evening. My solar panels produced plenty during the day, but our household used most power after sunset, when the utility’s expensive peak period started.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the home battery in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and configured it to charge from solar first. I spent an afternoon checking the monitoring app and changing the reserve setting to 20 percent. That reserve gives me some comfort during outages without sacrificing too much usable capacity.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. Instead of buying grid electricity while cooking, running the dishwasher, and charging devices, I now use stored solar energy. Before the battery, my average monthly bill in summer was around $210. Since installing it, I’ve usually landed between $85 and $110, depending on cloudy weather and how often we run the air conditioner. That is roughly $100 saved in a typical month, which feels more meaningful than seeing a theoretical efficiency number in an advertisement.
I did have one mildly frustrating moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at peak hours for two evenings. The app showed plenty of stored energy, but the house was quietly pulling from the grid. I power-cycled the inverter, checked that backup mode was still enabled, and contacted the installer. They reset a time-of-use schedule that the update had changed. It returned to normal the next day.
I now check the state of charge once a week, especially before a heat wave. The solar battery has not made my power bill disappear, but it has made evening usage noticeably cheaper and reduced my dependence on peak-rate electricity.
