I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but our air conditioner, cooking, and water heater pushed the meter hard between 4 and 9 p.m. The battery changed that pattern immediately. During sunny hours, it charges from excess solar power; after sunset, my hybrid inverter automatically switches to battery backup.

The biggest difference appears on the bill, not on the app. Before installation, our average summer bill was about $210. Now it is usually $125–$140, even though our usage has not changed much. On a clear day, I see the battery reach 100% around 2 p.m., then it carries the house through the peak window. That has been more valuable than I expected because our utility’s peak rate is nearly three times the overnight rate. I also appreciate the quietness: unlike our old generator, the solar battery makes no noise or fumes.

My only hiccup came during a storm. The monitoring app showed “grid standby,” and the battery stopped discharging even though the power was still on. I checked the inverter and found the system had switched to backup reserve mode after several short outages. Once I lowered the reserve from 30% to 20% in the settings, it returned to normal. I left that reserve in place because keeping emergency power matters more to me than squeezing out the last few dollars. The battery has already kept our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and one fan running through two outages.

When I researched the lithium ion battery for inverter price, I compared installed quotes rather than chasing the cheapest battery. Mine cost enough that payback is roughly seven years, but the comfort and predictable solar savings make it worthwhile for us.
