Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
One evening last January, I noticed our electric meter was pulling power from the grid even though the roof was still producing plenty of solar energy. That was the moment I stopped treating our battery as an expensive backup box and started using it deliberately.
Our setup is a 10-kWh home battery paired with a 6-kilowatt solar array. During sunny hours, it charges after the house is covered, then discharges from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., when our utility applies its highest time-of-use rate. The change in our routine was simple: I moved dishwasher and laundry cycles into late morning, while the battery handled cooking, lights, the refrigerator, and our heat-pump water heater in the evening.
The first month using that schedule, our bill fell from $186 to $94. Weather was milder, so I cannot credit every dollar to storage, but the peak-hour savings were obvious. Before installing the battery, dinner and showers were the most expensive part of our day. Now those loads are mostly powered by energy captured from our own roof. Watching the app show the battery discharging instead of buying electricity at 32 cents per kilowatt-hour has been surprisingly satisfying.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its usual time. The app showed “standby,” even though the state of charge was 78 percent. I restarted the inverter and checked the reserve setting; it had quietly reset from 20 percent to 80 percent. Lowering the backup reserve restored normal operation immediately. That taught me how important it is to check settings after updates, rather than assuming a hardware fault.
After six months, the battery has not eliminated our bill, but it has made it more predictable. For me, that practical control—not just emergency backup—is the strongest benefit of solar energy storage.
