Replacing my old grid-tied setup with a home solar battery has changed how I use electricity more than I expected. I already had panels and a growatt on grid solar inverter, but most of my solar power was exported during the afternoon, when our household demand was low. Then we bought electricity back in the evening at the higher peak rate. Adding a 10 kWh lithium battery finally allowed me to keep more of what my panels produced.
The installation was fairly straightforward. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the existing solar inverter, and added an energy management system. I spent the first week checking the monitoring app far too often. Seeing the battery charge from 35 percent to 100 percent on a sunny day was strangely satisfying. After sunset, it discharged gradually through dinner, lighting, television, and the dishwasher. I programmed it to avoid grid power from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., which is our expensive time-of-use window.
The biggest practical difference has been our evening bill. Before the battery, our summer electricity bill averaged about $190. Since installing it, similar months have been closer to $115, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. That is not a dramatic overnight payback, but saving around $60 to $80 monthly feels meaningful. We still draw from the grid during several cloudy mornings, so I am not pretending the house is energy independent.
I did have one minor scare when the battery stopped discharging during a heatwave. The app showed a temperature warning, and the system resumed automatically that night after the garage cooled. The installer explained that the protection feature was working as intended.
For me, the best part is not watching the battery percentage. It is running normal evening routines with less concern about peak electricity prices. The solar battery has made our existing system noticeably more useful without changing our habits.
