Using my rooftop solar with a battery has changed the way I think about electricity bills, especially during the evening peak. I installed a 10 kWh gull lifepo4 battery last spring alongside a hybrid inverter, mainly because my utility charges much more between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
The setup was less complicated than I expected, although I did need an electrician to adjust the inverter settings. The battery arrived at about 40% charge, and after commissioning, the solar panels spent the next day charging it. I set the system to prioritize household loads first and battery charging second. Once the battery reached its reserve level, it automatically supplied power after sunset.
The biggest practical difference appears at dinner time. Our oven, lights, refrigerator, and heat pump often run together, exactly when grid electricity is most expensive. Before adding energy storage, I could watch the smart meter climb during those hours. Now the battery usually covers that period almost completely. On a typical sunny day, it discharges around 6 to 8 kWh overnight, saving me roughly $2 to $3 in peak charges. That does not sound dramatic for one evening, but across a month it has reduced my bill by about $65, and more during winter when rates are higher.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging after a firmware update, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I restarted the inverter and contacted the installer, who corrected a time-of-use setting that had reverted to its default. Since then, the solar battery has been reliable.
I also appreciate having backup power during short outages. It does not run every heavy appliance, but it keeps the internet, refrigerator, lights, and a few outlets working. For me, the value of this LiFePO4 battery is not just energy independence; it is avoiding the expensive evening electricity window every day.
