Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Last summer, I installed a solar battery after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump during evening peak rates. My rooftop panels already covered most of our daytime use, but the expensive hours started just as we were cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and turning on the air conditioner. The battery storage system has made the biggest difference during that short window.
I chose an all in one inverter because I wanted a simpler installation and fewer separate boxes on the wall. The unit combines the solar inverter, battery controls, and monitoring in one cabinet. My installer finished the work in a day, although the app took another week to display everything correctly. At first, it showed the battery charging but reported strangely low household consumption. A firmware update fixed it, and I have not had the problem again.
On a normal sunny day, my panels charge the lithium battery by early afternoon. Once the sun goes down, the battery supplies the house automatically. I usually see it cover dinner, lights, the refrigerator, and several hours of cooling before the grid takes over. Our utility does not offer especially generous solar export credits, so using our own stored energy is more valuable than sending every extra kilowatt-hour back to the grid.
Before the solar battery, our summer bill averaged about $185 a month. Since installing it, we have been closer to $115, even though our air-conditioner use has not changed much. The exact savings vary with cloudy weather, but shifting energy away from peak pricing is clearly working.
What I appreciate most is not having to think about the system every day. I check the monitoring app occasionally, mainly to see the battery state of charge and solar production. It has quietly reduced our grid dependence without changing how we live, which is exactly what I hoped for.
