Running my evening routine changed after I installed a growatt 5 kw battery inverter with 10 kWh of lithium storage. Before that, our solar panels sent plenty back to the grid, but we still bought electricity during the expensive evening window. Now the battery charges from solar after breakfast and carries the house from about 4 p.m. until bedtime.

The biggest difference is dinner time. My partner cooks on an induction hob, I run the dishwasher, and the heat-pump water heater starts at the same time. Previously, that combination showed up on our bill. With the battery supplying those loads, our peak-hour consumption has dropped dramatically. On sunny weeks, our grid usage is often only 2 or 3 kWh, compared with roughly 10 kWh before storage. Our monthly bill fell by around 30 to 40 percent, although the saving depends on cloudy weather and utility rates.

I did have one troubleshooting moment during the first month. The battery stopped discharging overnight even though the app showed a healthy charge level. I found that a time-of-use schedule had been set incorrectly during commissioning. After changing the discharge window and restarting the inverter, it worked normally. I also learned not to judge performance from one rainy day; the battery cannot create energy, and several gray days reduce both solar production and backup capacity.

What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I check the monitoring app occasionally, but I rarely touch the system. During a short outage, it kept the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and a few outlets running without interruption. It is not a whole-house backup for my electric oven and air conditioner, but that modest emergency coverage feels worthwhile. For me, the practical win is using more of my own solar power instead of selling it cheaply and buying it back expensively later.
