Solution Solar Battery
Replacing our old solar setup with an iron phosphate lithium battery has made the biggest difference to our evening electricity use. Before the battery, our solar panels produced plenty during the day, but we sent much of that power back to the grid for a relatively small credit. By dinner time, we were buying electricity again, often during the most expensive peak period.
The installation itself was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, connected it to our solar battery system, and configured it to charge during the day and discharge after sunset. I mainly use the app to check the state of charge and daily energy flow. It took me a few days to understand the graphs, but now I can quickly see how much solar power went into the battery and how much we used overnight.
The real benefit shows up between about 5 and 9 p.m. Our oven, lights, television, refrigerator, and heat pump can run from stored solar energy instead of expensive grid power. On sunny days, the battery usually carries us well into the night. Our monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35–45%, although the exact savings depend on weather and how heavily we use heating or cooling.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening, even though the app showed plenty of charge. I checked the settings and found that a software update had switched the operating mode to backup reserve. After changing it back to self-consumption, everything worked normally. Since then, I have kept a larger backup reserve during storm season but use more of the capacity during ordinary weeks.
I still watch our electricity bill rather than assuming every month will be perfect. Even so, having reliable solar energy storage feels much more useful than exporting all our daytime generation. The battery has made our rooftop solar system practical after sunset, not just impressive at noon.
