Most evenings, I used to watch my electricity meter climb after the sun went down. Since adding a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery with a bmslifepo4 battery management system, our routine—and our bill—has changed noticeably.
Installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, connected the battery storage cables, and programmed it to charge from rooftop solar first. I asked for a reserve, so it keeps 20 percent capacity for outages. That setting has already made me appreciate having backup power without constantly worrying about draining the battery completely.
The biggest difference is during peak hours. Our utility charges more from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when dinner, laundry, lights, and the heat pump overlap. Before the battery, those five hours could add roughly $2.50 to $3.00 on a typical weekday. Now the solar battery discharges steadily through that window. My average evening grid usage has fallen from about 8 kWh to 1 or 2 kWh, and our monthly bill is usually $65 to $85 lower than it was before installation. It is not a miracle—the savings depend on weather, rates, and how much energy the house uses—but seeing the inverter app show battery power instead of expensive grid power is genuinely satisfying.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. For several nights, the battery stopped discharging at 6 p.m. even though it was full. I eventually found that a firmware update had reset the time-of-use schedule. After restoring the peak-rate hours, everything worked normally. The support technician also reminded me to check state of charge and temperature rather than guessing from the app alone.
After four months, the system feels boring. It quietly stores surplus solar energy, covers our evening load, provides outage protection, and lowers our monthly bill too.
