I installed a 10 kWh home battery last autumn, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity after our solar panels stopped producing. The unit is a lithium iron phosphate lifepo4 battery, chosen because I wanted a safer, longer-lasting chemistry rather than the cheapest option.
The setup was less intimidating than expected. An installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the inverter, and added a phone app showing solar generation, household load, state of charge, and grid imports. We already had rooftop solar, so installation took most of a day.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m., when my utility charges its peak rate. On sunny days, the battery fills by midafternoon, then carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and cooking appliances through dinner. Before storage, our monthly bill averaged about $185. Since adding it, comparable months have landed around $95 to $115, depending on weather. That is roughly $70 to $90 saved each month, and I can see exactly where the savings come from: fewer peak-hour imports.
It has not been completely effortless. One cold evening, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time and the app showed “standby.” I discovered I had accidentally left a backup reserve at 40 percent, while the battery was already near that level. Lowering the reserve to 20 percent fixed it.
During a power outage last winter, the battery switched to backup in a few seconds. My lights and internet stayed on, although I did not run the oven or washing machine. It is excellent for essential loads, not a whole-house generator.
After six months, my main advice is to size the solar battery around your evening usage, not your wish list. I am saving money every month, using more of my own clean energy, and worrying less about outages.
