Solution Solar Battery
Running our solar battery through its summer has changed how I think about electricity bills. I installed a 20-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my garage in March, paired with a growatt 20 kw inverter and rooftop panels. The main reason was simple: use more of my own solar power after sunset instead of buying expensive grid electricity during peak hours.
Before the battery, my evening routine was expensive. The dishwasher, induction cooktop, and heat pump would run after dinner, and the utility meter seemed spin fastest then. After installation, the battery charges from surplus solar around midday and discharges automatically from about 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. I kept the default settings at first, then adjusted the reserve to 25% so there’s still backup capacity for an outage.
My first bill with the system was $78, compared with $164 for the month year. The difference varies with weather and rates, but I am saving $60–$90 monthly in summer. That feels more tangible than watching a phone app graph, when I see the battery cover the evening peak without pulling from the grid.
One small scare happened during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 18% and showed a warning in the monitoring app. I checked the cables and breakers, but everything looked normal. A firmware update had changed the backup reserve setting, so I restored it and restarted the inverter. The warning cleared within minutes, and the stored energy began flowing again. I now check alerts weekly rather than assuming automation is perfect.
The biggest practical benefit is not energy independence; it is predictable household savings. I still buy electricity in winter, but during sunny months, the solar battery makes our evening usage feel nearly free.
