Running a growatt 12kw battery system for six months has changed the way I use electricity at home. Before installation, I sent most of my solar power back to the grid during the day, then bought it back during expensive evening hours. Now, the battery stores that daytime surplus and carries us through dinner, television, laundry, and most of the night.

The biggest difference has been our peak-hour bill. We used to come home around 5 p.m. and immediately start drawing grid power. With the solar battery charged, the house switches over automatically, so the oven, lights, refrigerator, and heat pump run from stored energy. My monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35 percent, although the exact savings depend on cloudy weather and how much heating we use. I especially notice the difference after sunny weekends, when the battery is full by lunchtime and still has plenty left after bedtime.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during the first month. The battery stopped discharging one evening, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of charge. I checked the inverter and found that a recent settings update had changed the reserve level to 50 percent. That meant the system was protecting half the battery for backup instead of using it during peak pricing. I lowered the reserve to 20 percent, and normal operation returned immediately. I now keep a higher reserve before storms, which feels like a practical compromise.

The system is not magic; several rainy days can empty the battery, and I still buy electricity occasionally. However, watching the solar monitoring app and seeing our evening consumption covered by stored power is genuinely satisfying. For me, the most valuable feature is not independence from the grid, but using my own solar energy when electricity costs the most. Six months in, the battery feels like a quiet, dependable part of the house rather than another gadget to manage.
