I installed a 10-kWh lithium fer phosphate batterie system beside my garage last spring because our evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. My solar panels already covered most daytime use, but the house still pulled power from the grid between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when the price jumped. The installer finished in one day and connected the battery to my inverter. I had expected dust and rewiring everywhere, but the mess was small. The app showed generation, battery charge, household load, and grid import in real time, which became my favorite feature.
On a sunny day, the battery reaches 100% by afternoon. It then powers the refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, lights, and our heat pump after sunset. I programmed a 20% reserve so we would not completely drain it, and that buffer has been useful during outages. Before storage, my monthly bill averaged around $185 during summer. Since adding the solar battery, it has generally landed between $70 and $95, even though our usage has not changed much. That difference feels more meaningful than the glossy payback estimates I saw online: it is money I actually notice leaving my checking account each month.
The only hiccup came during a firmware update in August. The app suddenly reported “standby” while the battery was at 64%. I panicked, then checked the inverter display and found it was still supplying the house. Support had me restart the gateway, wait five minutes, and reconnect it. The status returned normally, and no stored energy was lost. I now glance at the monitoring app once or twice a week rather than obsessing over every watt.
For me, the biggest benefit is simple: I use more of my own solar power instead of selling it cheaply to the utility. The battery has made our evening routine quieter and our bill noticeably lower.
