Owning a home battery has changed the way I use my solar panels, especially after sunset. I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive grid electricity during evening peak hours. The installation took an afternoon. My electrician added a hybrid inverter, mounted the battery in the garage, and connected the monitoring app. I did spend an evening learning what state of charge actually meant.
The savings became obvious within the first month. Before storage, my family cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and watched television when utility rates were highest. Now the battery charges from rooftop solar around lunchtime and discharges automatically from 4 p.m. until bedtime. On sunny days, I reach 100 percent before noon. My monthly bill dropped from $145 to $75. During winter, the result is less dramatic, but I still save about $35 to $50 monthly. I also like using stored energy to run my core i5 6th gen pc in the evening without pulling as much power from the grid.
My only hiccup happened during a week of cloudy weather. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected, and the app showed a warning about backup availability. I initially thought the system had failed, but the reserve setting was set at 30 percent. I lowered it to 15 percent after checking the manual, and the warning disappeared. I kept the higher reserve for storm season, though, because having emergency power matters more to me than squeezing out every last dollar.
After eight months, the battery has been quiet, predictable, and easy to forget about. I check the solar battery monitor every few days, out of curiosity. It has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made my energy use feel far more controlled. For my household, peak-hour savings and backup power have justified the cost better than I expected.
