Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
2,100-watt solar panels sounded impressive when I bought them, but the real difference came after I added a home energy storage battery. Before the battery, my electricity bill jumped whenever we cooked dinner, ran the washing machine, and used air conditioning after sunset. I was sending plenty of solar power back to the grid during the day and then buying it back during expensive evening hours.
Now, my lithium solar battery usually charges by early afternoon. Around 4 p.m., it switches from charging to powering the house, and that stored energy carries us through most of the evening. On sunny days, I can run the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, television, and often the dishwasher without drawing much from the grid. My monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35 to 45 percent, depending on weather and how much air conditioning we use. The savings are especially noticeable during peak-rate hours.
My system also includes a small 12volts battery setup for a shed light and security camera. It is separate from the main battery bank, but I learned quickly that battery terminology can be confusing. A “12volts battery” listing does not automatically mean it will work with every inverter or charge controller. I had to check voltage, capacity, cable size, and battery chemistry carefully.
The only real problem happened during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected and shut off output overnight. Nothing was broken; I had simply set the backup reserve too high at 40 percent. I lowered it to 20 percent, while keeping enough emergency capacity for an outage, and the system worked normally again.
I still watch the solar monitoring app every few days, mostly out of curiosity. Seeing our evening usage come from stored solar power is satisfying, and the quieter, lower bills make the battery storage worthwhile for me.
