Using our home battery every evening has changed the way I think about electricity. We installed a 10 kWh lithium battery alongside our rooftop solar last summer, mainly to avoid buying power during the expensive 4–9 p.m. window. The setup was less dramatic than I expected: an electrician mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and spent an afternoon checking backup circuits and the monitoring app.
The biggest difference shows up on ordinary sunny days. Our panels charge the battery by about 2 p.m., and the system then runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and cooking appliances after sunset. Before storage, those evening hours were the most expensive part of our bill. Since installation, our monthly electricity cost has dropped from roughly $210 to $95–120, depending on weather and heating use. It is not a magic “free power” machine—we still pull from the grid overnight in winter—but the peak-hour savings are very noticeable.
I had one minor troubleshooting moment in the first month. The battery stopped discharging even though the app showed a healthy state of charge. I initially thought the lithium battery was faulty, but the installer found that a backup reserve setting had been accidentally raised to 80 percent. Lowering it to 25 percent fixed the issue immediately. Now I check the battery status once or twice a week rather than obsessing over it.
I also looked into whether to build your own lithium battery, because DIY battery storage kits seemed cheaper. After comparing safety certification, battery management systems, warranty coverage, and installation requirements, I decided a professionally installed solar battery made more sense for my house. The quiet operation and predictable energy savings have been worth it. My main advice is to size the storage around your evening usage, not just the biggest battery you can afford for your home.
