X-factor for me was not having more panels, but storing the afternoon solar power for the expensive evening hours. Before installing my home solar battery, I was sending excess generation back to the grid and still buying electricity after 6 p.m. in our hottest months.
My setup is a 5-kW rooftop system paired with a 5-kWh lithium battery and hybrid inverter. The installer finished in one day, although I spent another evening checking the monitoring app and labeling the breakers. That small bit of homework was worthwhile: I now understand when the battery is charging, discharging, or waiting for backup.
The biggest difference appears between 5 and 10 p.m. My battery charges from solar during the day, then runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television after sunset. In the first full month, my bill dropped from about $184 to $96. It was not a perfect comparison because weather varied, but the peak-hour reduction was obvious. I also changed the inverter schedule so grid charging starts only when a storm leaves the battery low. That prevented an unpleasant surprise on my next bill.
One minor troubleshooting moment came during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 30 percent, even though the app showed plenty of capacity. I found the backup reserve had accidentally been raised to 30 percent during a firmware update. Lowering it restored normal operation; no service call was needed. That experience also taught me to leave a sensible reserve for outages instead of chasing every last kilowatt-hour.
