Running a solar battery at home has changed the way I think about electricity, especially during the evening peak. I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly because our utility’s time-of-use rates had become painful. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and spent most of the afternoon configuring charging limits and backup settings. I used the growatt official website to check the model information beforehand, although I still relied on the installer for the final compatibility checks.
The biggest practical difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, our solar panels exported cheap midday power and we bought expensive electricity after dinner. Now the battery charges from excess solar around lunchtime and discharges while we cook, run the dishwasher, and watch television. On clear summer days, that has cut my evening grid consumption by roughly 7 to 9 kWh. Our monthly bill fell from about $185 to $108 during the first summer month. Results vary with weather, but seeing the monitoring app show battery power covering the house is satisfying.
I did have one scare in the first month. The battery stopped discharging overnight and showed a communication warning. I rebooted the inverter, checked the cable connection, and discovered a loose plug that had not clicked fully into place. After reconnecting it, the system resumed normal operation. Since then, I have kept the battery reserve at 20 percent rather than chasing every last kilowatt-hour. That reserve gives us backup power during outages and avoids unnecessary deep cycling.
For me, the value is not independence from the grid. It is shifting solar energy into expensive hours, reducing peak demand, and making our electricity spending more predictable. The battery has become part of our daily routine.
