Evening electricity used to be the part of my household budget that annoyed me most. Our solar panels produced plenty during the day, but I was still buying expensive power after dinner when everyone switched on lights, the oven, and the heat pump.
I added a home energy storage battery last spring, paired with a felicity inverter, mainly to shift that daytime solar into the evening.
The difference showed up on my first full bill. My grid usage during the utility's peak window dropped dramatically. Instead of watching the battery percentage fall nervously, I now check the app once after dinner and see the house running mostly from stored solar energy. Over three billing cycles, my evening consumption fell enough to save roughly $45 to $60 per month, depending on the weather.
That is not a dramatic number compared with the price of the whole system, but it makes the investment feel practical rather than theoretical. I also noticed fewer surprises on cloudy days. The battery charges whenever there is enough solar generation, then reserves itself for the evening peak. On a particularly gloomy day, it did not fill completely, so the system imported some electricity overnight, but the bill was still lower than before.
My only real hiccup happened during the second week. The battery stopped discharging at about 40 percent, even though the app showed the house was drawing power. I checked the obvious things—backup reserve, schedule, and grid settings—but nothing looked wrong. After restarting the inverter through its proper shutdown procedure, it resumed normal operation that evening. I later learned a firmware update had changed the discharge setting.
That small episode reminded me that a solar battery is not completely “fit and forget.” I now glance at the settings monthly and keep the support number saved.
