Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
After six months of watching my rooftop solar panels send cheap midday electricity back to the grid, I finally installed a 10kWh home battery storage unit. The main reason was simple: our evening use starts just when the solar production disappears.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter in our garage, ran a short cable to the existing hybrid inverter, and configured the battery management system through an app. I had to choose a reserve level, so I kept 20% available for outages. The app showed solar generation, battery state of charge, household load, and grid imports without much delay.
During the first week, I mostly watched rather than trusted it. On sunny days, the panels filled the battery by about 2:30 p.m., and the system carried our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television through the expensive evening period. Before storage, my utility bill averaged around $145 monthly. With net metering and the battery, it has landed between $78 and $92, depending on weather. That is roughly $55 saved in a typical month, not an imaginary maximum based on perfect sunshine.
The only annoyance was a morning when the battery stopped discharging at 58%. I initially suspected a failed battery cell or loose connection. The app displayed a grid import warning, so I checked the inverter settings and found that a firmware update had reset the discharge schedule to “disabled.” Re-enabling time-of-use mode fixed it immediately.
Since then, I have become deliberate about energy use. I run the dishwasher and washing machine after lunch, then let the lithium battery handle cooking and heating later. I researched DIY packs using “batterie litio 18650” cells, but decided not to build one myself; safety, balancing, enclosure, and warranty matter to me.
