I installed a 10 kWh lithium off grid battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. We already had rooftop solar, but by 5 p.m. the panels were producing very little and the house was still using the oven, lights, television, and heat-pump water heater.

The change was noticeable from the first full week. The battery charges from surplus solar during the afternoon, then supplies the house after sunset. Before storage, our solar export credit was small, while we bought expensive power between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Now the battery usually covers that whole window. Our average monthly bill fell from about $185 to $92 over the summer. That is not a perfect comparison because weather and air-conditioning use vary, but the difference is real on the utility statements.

I particularly like watching the energy monitor while cooking dinner. The inverter shows the battery discharging at roughly 2 to 3 kW, and the grid meter stays almost still. On sunny days, I sometimes wake up with 20 percent remaining, which gives me a useful reserve if the morning is cloudy. I set the backup reserve to 25 percent rather than chasing every last kilowatt-hour, because keeping some battery capacity available feels more practical than saving a few cents.

My one frustrating moment came during a firmware update. The monitoring app showed the battery as offline for nearly an hour although the inverter lights looked normal. I restarted the communications gateway, waited, and the connection returned. The battery never stopped powering the house, so it was an app issue rather than a storage failure.

After several months, the solar battery has become background equipment which is exactly what I wanted. It is quiet, automatic, and especially valuable during peak hours. That matters daily.
