Nearly two months ago I added a 10-kWh lithium solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. Before that, my panels produced plenty during the day, but our household came alive after dinner: dishwasher, television, laptops, and the heat pump all ran when rates were highest.

The setup was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter and added an energy meter. They finished in one day, although I spent the evening checking the monitoring app every few minutes. The only surprise was how quiet the unit was; I hear a soft click when it switches from charging to discharging, but otherwise it is easy to ignore.

On sunny days the battery usually reaches 100 percent by lunchtime. It then carries the house through the expensive window, typically from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. My utility bill used to average about $210 monthly. After adding the battery, it has been closer to $125, despite one rainy month. That is roughly $85 saved each month, although I know the exact figure will change with weather and rates.

A small test came during a power interruption last week. The lights flickered, then the battery took over without waking anyone. My internet router stayed on, and I could keep working at the kitchen table. I even plugged my work laptop into an inverter for laptop, which sounds redundant because the home inverter was already running, but I wanted a backup option. It handled the laptop charger easily for several hours.

One practical annoyance is that the app reports “communication delayed” after our Wi-Fi router restarts. The battery itself keeps operating; I just lose statistics until the connection returns. I have not needed to call support. For me, the battery has been worthwhile.
