Replacing my old backup battery with a solar storage system built around the growatt sph 8000 was less intimidating than I expected. My electrician mounted the inverter in the garage and paired it with a 10 kWh lithium battery and the existing rooftop solar panels.
The setup took most of a day, mainly because we had to relocate one conduit and tidy up some old wiring. Once powered on, the battery started charging from solar without any drama. I liked seeing the app show solar generation, household load, and battery state of charge in real time. It took me a couple of evenings to understand the settings, especially the difference between backup reserve and the amount available for normal cycling.
The biggest practical change is during peak hours. I live on a time-of-use tariff, so I programmed the battery to charge through the afternoon while the panels were producing, then cover our evening cooking, lighting, and heat-pump use. Before installing solar battery storage, our high-rate electricity use often ran from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Now the meter usually shows very little grid import in that window.
On clear summer days, the battery reaches 100 percent by midafternoon and carries us until bedtime. My daily bill saving is not perfectly consistent, but it averages roughly $2 to $4 on weekdays compared with similar usage before the installation. That may sound modest, but across a month it is noticeable, especially when utility rates jump in winter.
For me, the system is worthwhile because it turns excess solar into predictable evening power, not because it makes us independent from the grid. I keep a backup reserve for outages, check battery temperature during hot weather, and otherwise barely notice it working. That quiet daily routine is exactly what I wanted.
