Nearly two years ago, I added a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery to my modest rooftop system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. Before the battery, my panels exported most of their midday energy, and I still paid for cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging our car after sunset.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected, although watching the installer configure the hybrid inverter was surprisingly interesting. The electrician added a new breaker, battery disconnect, and monitoring gateway, then walked me through the app.
What I notice most is the peak-hour savings. On sunny days, the battery fills by early afternoon; the inverter holds that charge instead of exporting it at a low credit. From 4:00 p.m. until bedtime, I run the refrigerator, lights, heat-pump water heater, and car charger from stored solar power. My utility bill fell from about $190 per month to $112 on average, despite similar weather and usage. That is roughly $78 saved monthly, although winter bills still climb when daylight is scarce.
The app also helped me catch a small problem. One morning, I saw the battery sitting at 62% instead of charging, and the status showed “grid standby.” I reset the communications gateway and checked the battery disconnect; after reseating one loose network cable, the inverter began charging normally. I have not had a repeat, but that moment taught me not to confuse a full solar battery with a guaranteed backup system. During an outage, mine can power selected circuits, not the whole house, unless I manually manage heavier loads. That limitation feels manageable, and the savings worthwhile.
