8 months ago, I installed a home solar battery after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every evening. My goal was: store daytime solar power and use it during peak hours instead of buying expensive grid electricity.
Installation was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage, connected a battery management system, and programmed charging to finish before sunset. I kept the grid connection, so there was no lifestyle change. The first evening, I noticed the inverter switching the house from solar storage around 4:30 p.m. The refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater continued normally, while the battery supplied of the load.
The savings became obvious after one billing cycle. Before installation, my evening usage pushed me into the highest tariff period. Now, I usually reach 100% charge by mid-afternoon, and the battery carries us until about 10:30 p.m. My monthly bill has fallen by 30-40%, depending on cloudy weather. I am not claiming energy independence, but avoiding those peak rates feels more valuable than the battery capacity.
I did have one scare in the first month. The battery stopped discharging at 52%, even though the app showed energy. I found the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 50% during commissioning. Lowering that setting to 20% solved it. I now leave 25% reserved for outages, which gives me peace of mind without sacrificing much savings.
After eight months, I am pleased with the solar battery system. The 280ah LFP battery has been quiet, stable, and predictable. For me, the biggest benefit is not fancy monitoring graphs; it is seeing the meter stay calm during expensive hours.
