Since installing my 10-kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring, I’ve paid much closer attention to when our electricity is actually being used. The biggest difference has been between 4 and 9 p.m., when the utility’s peak rate kicks in. Before the battery, our heat pump and cooking pushed the evening bill noticeably higher, even after a sunny day. Now the solar panels charge the battery through the afternoon, and the inverter automatically carries the house through those expensive hours.
On an average weekday, I see roughly 6–8 kWh discharged after sunset. That has cut my monthly bill by around $45 in summer, although the exact savings depend on weather and how much the heat pump runs.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, added a dedicated breaker, and configured backup loads for the refrigerator, internet, lights, and gas furnace controls. I specifically asked about LiFePO4 chemistry because I wanted a long-life solar battery, not the cheapest option. During my research, I even saw listings describing “used lifepo4 medical batteries,” but I decided against repurposed units for a residential installation; I preferred a new battery with a warranty, documented capacity, and proper battery management system.
My only real hiccup came during the first cold snap. The battery stopped discharging overnight, and the app showed a reserve warning. I initially thought something had failed, but the installer explained that the low-temperature protection setting was preventing charging in the unheated garage. We enabled a small battery heater and adjusted the minimum state-of-charge setting. Since then, performance has been steady.
For me, the value is not total energy independence. I still have a grid connection. It is predictable peak-hour savings, quieter evenings, and knowing the refrigerator stays on during a short outage. I check the solar monitoring app weekly and would make the same storage choice again.
