After installing a 5kWh lithium solar battery in my garage last spring, I finally stopped feeling like my rooftop panels were only useful from 10am to 3pm. During sunny days, the battery charges before lunch, then carries the house through the expensive evening hours.

The difference on my bill shows between 4pm and 9pm. Before storage, our electricity use jumped when we cooked, ran the dishwasher, and turned on the heat pump. Now I set the inverter to use stored solar first, and grid power only when the battery gets low. A typical month used to cost around $180; lately it is closer to $105, although weather and utility rates vary.

My part is seeing the battery monitor and knowing we made it through the night with leftover sunlight. I also keep a battery pack 12v for emergency lighting and my router. It is separate from the main solar battery, but it has been useful during two outages.

The only hiccup came during the week. The battery stopped discharging at 30% even though the app showed reserve. I found the backup setting was enabled too conservatively. After lowering the reserve to 15%, the system began covering the evening load. I left a higher reserve for storms, so that compromise works.

Installation was straightforward, though I wish I had planned wall space better. The inverter and battery take more room than the sales photos suggested, and the cables need tidy routing. Still, after six months, this solar energy storage setup has quietly reduced grid dependence without changing our routine. For me, that is exactly what I wanted: less peak electricity spending and more value from the panels already on my roof.
