I installed a home solar battery system last spring, mainly because our electricity rates jump sharply between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before that, our rooftop panels sent plenty of power back to the grid during the afternoon, then we bought it back at the worst price after dinner. The battery changed that routine more than I expected.
Setup was fairly painless. The installer mounted a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in the garage and connected it to our existing solar inverter. The monitoring app initially showed the battery as a “lighting inverter,” which confused me until support explained it was simply a labeling issue in the app, not a wiring problem. They corrected the label remotely the next morning. I appreciated that small bit of support, because I was already imagining an expensive service visit.
Our daily savings are easiest to notice on sunny weekdays. The battery fills from excess solar around lunchtime, then powers the refrigerator, dishwasher, and heat pump during the evening peak. In the first full month, our utility bill fell from about $186 to $119, despite similar weather and usage. That is roughly $67 saved, and the battery did most of the work simply by shifting when we used electricity.
The best surprise is how quiet it is. I hear a brief hum when charging, but nothing from inside the house. On cloudy days, it still covers our evening essentials, though I avoid running the clothes dryer and oven together. During one outage, the battery switched over automatically; our Wi-Fi and a few lights stayed on, which made the system feel worthwhile beyond bill savings.
I now check the state of charge before leaving for work, but I rarely adjust anything. The battery storage has made solar power feel usable after sunset, rather than electricity exported.
