8 months ago, I added a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to my rooftop solar setup, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. The battery is built around 280ah eu stock cells, which sounded like an oddly specific detail when I was shopping, but the usable capacity has been the part I notice every day.
Before storage, my solar panels covered the house well until about 4 p.m. After that, the inverter pulled grid power during cooking, laundry, and the evening heat pump cycle. Now the battery charges through late morning and early afternoon, then discharges after sunset. In practical terms, I usually see the battery sitting around 70–90% by dinner, even after running the dishwasher. That has made my peak-hour electricity use almost disappear.
The savings are easiest to notice on the monthly bill. My evening rates are roughly double the daytime solar export credit, so shifting those hours to stored solar has cut my bills by about 35 to 45 percent, depending on cloudy weather. It is not a dramatic zero-dollar bill every month, but the consistency is valuable. I stopped watching the utility app nervously during the 5–9 p.m. window, which is honestly the biggest lifestyle improvement.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. During a particularly hot week, the battery stopped discharging overnight. The monitoring app showed a warning about temperature, and I initially assumed something serious had failed. I cleared leaves blocking airflow around the inverter and checked the battery cabinet’s ventilation. After it cooled down, normal operation returned. That experience taught me not to ignore the installation manual’s clearance advice, even though the system had otherwise been almost maintenance-free.
For anyone comparing home energy storage, I’d focus less on headline battery capacity and more on usable kWh, round-trip efficiency, inverter settings, and peak-rate savings.
