Energy bills used to be the part of my summer routine that I dreaded most. Last year, I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate home battery alongside my rooftop solar panels, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset.
Before the battery, my air conditioner ran through the evening and pushed me into the utility's peak-rate window. Now, solar power charges the battery during the afternoon, and the battery takes over at roughly 4 p.m. By bedtime, I am usually still running on stored energy. My monthly bill fell from about $185 to $92 in the hottest month, even though we used the air conditioner just as much. That saving matters more to me than the app's colorful graphs.
The setup was painless, although I did have a nervous moment. Two weeks in, the battery stopped discharging during peak hours. The monitoring app showed “standby,” while the house quietly pulled power from the grid. I checked the operating schedule and discovered that a firmware update had reset my time-of-use settings. After restoring the peak-rate hours and restarting the inverter, everything worked normally. I now glance at the app every few days, but I do not obsess over it.
One unexpected benefit is peace of mind during short outages. Our lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few outlets keep working automatically, which is far more useful than I expected. I even joked that checking the battery app has become my household equivalent of using the best at home covid test: a quick reassurance that things are okay.
The battery has not eliminated my electric bill, especially during several cloudy days, but it has made solar self-consumption much higher. For me, the practical win is simple: less peak-hour energy purchased, quieter budgeting, and no daily effort beyond letting the solar battery do its job.
