Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running my home on solar power felt straightforward until I started watching the evening electricity charges. My rooftop panels usually covered daytime use, but cooking, laundry, and the heat-pump water heater all came on after sunset. That was where my growatt 3kw battery inverter made a noticeable difference.
I installed the system with a lithium battery rather than trying to power the whole house overnight. The setup was less dramatic than I expected: the installer mounted the inverter beside the switchboard, connected the battery, and configured a backup circuit for the refrigerator, lights, internet router, and outlets. The Growatt app took a couple of days to show useful patterns, but now I can see solar generation, battery state of charge, and grid import at a glance.
The biggest practical win is peak-hour bill savings. I set the battery to charge from solar during the day and discharge from about 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., when my tariff is highest. On sunny days, it supplies most of our evening cooking and television use. My grid consumption during that expensive window fell by roughly 6 to 8 kilowatt-hours daily. That has reduced my monthly bill by around $70 to $95, depending on weather and how much air-conditioning we use.
There was one minor annoyance. During the first hot week, the battery stopped discharging early because its temperature protection kicked in. The installer improved airflow around the battery cabinet, and I shifted the discharge schedule slightly later. It has been stable since.
I still pull electricity from the grid on cloudy days, so the battery is not magic. However, the solar storage system feels practical rather than complicated: fewer peak-rate imports, quieter evenings, and control over my energy use. For me, that is the value of battery storage.
