Replacing our aging grid-tied setup with a home battery has changed how I use electricity more than I expected. I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery alongside a growatt on grid inverter compatible LiFePO4 Battery last spring, mainly to avoid buying power during expensive evening hours.

My electrician mounted the battery in the garage, added the energy meter, and connected it to the existing solar inverter through the approved backup equipment. The battery app showed charge and discharge levels. I did spend an afternoon adjusting the operating schedule because the first setting began discharging at 4 p.m., before our utility’s peak period started. Once I moved the start time to 6 p.m., the system made much more sense.

Our solar panels usually fill the battery by early afternoon. From 6 to 9 p.m., the battery runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and often the dishwasher. Before storage, those three hours were when our electricity bill climbed fastest. On sunny days, I now use little grid power in the evening. My monthly bill dropped by roughly $45 to $65 during summer, depending on air-conditioning use. That is not a dramatic overnight payoff, but it is a noticeable, repeatable saving.

The most useful feature has been the backup reserve. I keep 25 percent untouched, so brief outages do not interrupt our internet or freezer. We had one storm outage that lasted about two hours, and the battery switched over without any drama. I only noticed because the app sent a notification.

There was one minor annoyance: during a cloudy week, the battery reached its reserve earlier than expected, so I temporarily lowered the reserve to 15 percent. I changed it back afterward. Overall, this solar battery has made our energy use steadier, reduced peak-hour purchases, and made our rooftop solar feel more practical.
