8 months ago, I added a 280ah 12v agm deep cycle battery to my small rooftop solar setup, mainly to stop sending cheap afternoon power back to the grid and then buying electricity during the evening peak. I was nervous about the installation because I am comfortable with basic wiring, but I am not an electrician. I hired a local installer to connect the solar charge controller, battery fuse, inverter, and battery monitor. The whole job took most of a Saturday, including mounting the battery in a ventilated utility cupboard.

The difference showed up almost immediately. Before adding battery storage, my home used solar power during the day, but the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and television were still pulling from the grid after sunset. Now, the AGM battery usually charges by early afternoon and runs those smaller loads through the evening. My average electricity bill has dropped by about $35 to $45 per month, depending on the weather. That is not a dramatic whole-house saving, but it is very noticeable in my budget.

The battery performs best when I avoid heavy appliances at night. I still run the washing machine and water heater while the panels are producing power. On a sunny day, the battery monitor often shows 80–90% capacity before dinner, and I typically finish the evening around 45–55%. During several cloudy days, the solar battery needed a little help from the grid, which was expected.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The inverter began beeping and showing a low-voltage warning after a night of unusually high usage. I discovered that I had left a small space heater plugged in, which drained the battery far faster than normal. After removing it and changing the inverter’s low-voltage cutoff settings with the installer’s guidance, everything returned to normal.

For my modest home, this 12v AGM battery has been a practical, low-maintenance addition rather than a complete energy-independence solution.
