Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Having our solar battery installed last spring, I expected lower bills, but I underestimated how noticeable the change would be. Before the installation, our rooftop panels sent excess electricity straight to the grid during the day, while we bought power back every evening. The battery now stores that midday surplus and runs the house after sunset. That simple shift has been the biggest practical improvement.
I chose a lithium iron phosphate battery after comparing a few home energy storage systems. The usable capacity is 10 kWh, paired with a hybrid inverter. I didn't need to rewire the house; the installer finished in one day and connected the monitoring app before dinner. Setup was less dramatic than I expected. The only annoyance was that the app showed confusing charge percentages for the first week. Support reset the battery profile, and after that, readings matched the inverter display much more closely.
On sunny days, the battery is usually full by early afternoon. At 5 p.m., when our utility's peak rate begins, it starts discharging automatically. We cook, run the dishwasher, and charge phones without pulling expensive grid electricity. Our evening usage is fairly ordinary, so the battery often carries us until bedtime.
Over the first three full billing cycles, our electricity bill averaged about $38 less per month than the same period last year, despite using the air conditioner more. Weather obviously changes the comparison, but seeing the battery cover peak hours is satisfying because the savings happen quietly, every evening.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a cloudy weekend, the battery stopped discharging at 62 percent. The app showed a grid connection warning, although the house still had power. I turned the system off and on using its main switch, then called support. They cleared the alert remotely.
